WAX LOVE ITALY ******** Distr. : IT - NE - Sonic Rendezvous US - Forced Exposure Style : reissue / rock / pop / folk / WLV 82001 BOB DYLAN BOB DYLAM LP 11.2017 Wax Love present a reissue of Bob Dylan's debut album, originally released in March of 1962. Bob Dylan's debut album announced the arrival of a singer-songwriter who would change the face of 20th century music and popular culture. Though it was Freewheelin' the following year that would make him an international star and the voice of a generation, this debut is a crucial piece of folk music history and a stunning example of his early song-craft. Back in print with a beautifully redesigned cover on Wax Love. Includes a bonus track, "Mixed-Up Confusion". http://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82001LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82002 JUDY COLLINS GOLDEN APPLES OF THE SUN LP 11.2017 Wax Love present a reissue of Judy Collins's Golden Apples Of The Sun, originally released in 1962. Legendary folk singer Judy Collins began her musical career as a piano prodigy -- the daughter of a professional musician and radio host -- but it was the work of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger that inspired Collins to pick up a guitar in the 1950s and set her off down a career of folk music stardom. Originally released in 1962, Golden Apples Of The Sun is her second LP and is mostly made up of traditional material rearranged by Collins and her unique and iconic voice. A classic of the '60s folk revival back in print on LP. http://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82002LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82003 ARETHA FRANKLIN THE FIRST 12 SIDES LP 11.2017 Wax Love present a reissue of Aretha Franklin's The First 12 Sides, originally released as Aretha in 1961. Before Aretha hit big with her stomping southern soul sound in the late '60s, she'd already had quite a career. Beginning as a gospel singer Franklin spent the early '60s recording in a variety of styles to varying success. While her other releases were overproduced and poppy, these very early recordings with the Ray Bryant group are beautiful jazz vocal stylings in the manner of Sarah Vaughan or Ella Fitzgerald. Beautifully recorded with no overdubs this is fantastic early '60s jazz and her voice is as perfect a fit for this material as it is for the soul she's famous for. http://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82003LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82004 PROFESSOR LONGHAIR : MARDI GRASS IN NEW ORLEANS LP 12.2017 Fusing diverse elements of blues, barrelhouse boogie-woogie, funk and gospel, with mambo, rhumba and second-line street parade rhythms, Professor Longhair's contribution to today's musical vocabulary is immeasurable. This compilation of B-sides, rarities and alternate takes, recorded between 1949 and 1957, honours one of the great and unique talents in rock'n'roll and blues history. http://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82004LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82005 DIZZY GILLESPIE : DIZZY ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA LP 11.2017 Wax Love present a reissue of Dizzy Gillespie's Dizzy On The French Riviera, originally released in 1962. Recorded July 24, 1962 at the 3rd International Jazz Festival D'Antibes/Juan-Les-Pins, this is classic 1960s Dizzy. It's smooth and swinging without losing any of his patented power. Produced by Quincy Jones, and featuring piano and arrangements from Argentinian master Lalo Schifrin, Gillespie shines here alongside underrated reed man Leo Wright. A great early '60s Dizzy group absolutely slaying live to a receptive audience. http://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82005LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82006 THE BEATLES : A TASTE OF HONEY-LIVE AT STAR CLUB, LP 11.2017 HAMBURG 1962 The Beatles played five residencies in Hamburg between 1960 and 1962, the last of which is captured here in December of 1962, just a few months after Ringo Starr replaced Pete Best and finalized the lineup that would soon be known as The Fab Four. The group would soon be signed to Parlophone and the rest, as they say, is history. This is part one of two historical live recordings, from a two-LP set originally released as Live! At The Star-Club In Hamburg, Germany; 1962 in 1977, that capture the band just before they rocketed to stardom. A truly important piece of Beatles history back in print. http://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82006LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82007 ROVERT JOHNSON DRUNKEN HEARTED MAN LP 11.2017 A collection of the finest moments of the only two known recording sessions by the King of Delta Blues, Robert Johnson. A man whose poorly documented life and death at 27 have given rise to much legend in the last 30 years, Johnson had little or none public recognition for his work in his lifetime. Rumored to have sold his soul at the crossroads to achieve success, Robert Johnson lived his whole life playing at street corners and Saturday night dances, writing the soundtrack for half a century of rock culture to come. Featuring all-time classics such as "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom" or "Kind Hearted Woman Blues", this is mandatory for all early folk and blues aficionados. http://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82007LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82008 WOODY GUTHRIE DUST BOWL BALLADS LP 12.2017 Wax Love present a reissue of Woody Guthrie's Dust Bowl Ballads, originally released as a full LP in 1964. This is the first record that "The Oklahoma Cowboy" made in NYC for Alan Lomax, after his arrival in 1940, as part of his work for the Library of Congress, taped on April 26th and May 3rd. Originally released as three separate 78 rpm records, these are Guthrie's tales about one of the most dire periods in rural America, the Dust Bowl era. This quintessential work proves that Guthrie was a true minstrel of the other face of America, the one that you can't find in history books : tales of poverty, migration, storms, illness, hunger and harsh criticism of the American government. This record kills fascists. http://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82008LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82009 SCREAMIN' JAZ HAWKINS : AT HOME WITH... LP 03.2018 Wax Love present a reissue of At Home With Screamin' Jay Hawkins, originally released in 1958. By far one of the most outrageous performers of the early years of rock, prone to emerging from coffins on stage, with a flaming skull named Henry as his constant companion, Screamin' Jay was an insanely theatrical figure long before it was even remotely acceptable. His 1958 debut, At Home, featuring his legendary "I Put A Spell On You," along with surreal hits like "Hong Kong," "Take Me Back To The Boot And Saddle," or his wild-ass reinventions of old standards like "I Love Paris" and "Deep Purple" is a carefully arranged yet gritty, Ray Charles-gone-crazy styled, full band rhythm, and blues masterpiece, filled with enough howls and groans to send chills down your spine. https://www.forcedexposure.com/Product.aspx?CatalogNo=WLV.82009LP --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82010 BOB DYLAN FREEWHEELIN' OUTTAKES LP 11.2017 [THE COLUMBIA YEARS, NYC, 1962 Unlike his debut (WLV 82001LP) -- which took only two days in the studio to record -- The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan finally emerged in May 1963 after some eight sessions at Columbia Records Studio A, over the course of nearly a year. The time and effort paid off in spades, as he emerged from the studio a fully-formed bona fide songwriter with a legitimate hit on his hands. Obviously, the final album left much material on the cutting room floor and with this release, Wax Love bring some of that rarely heard material back to light. A mix of originals that never made it onto any LP, alternate takes, and cover songs, Freewheelin' Outtakes: The Columbia Sessions, NYC, 1962 captures America's most important living songwriter at a pivotal moment in his career when he emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene to become the voice of his generation. http://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82010LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82011 JOAN BAEZ JOAN BAEZ LP 12.2017 Wax Love present a reissue of Joan Baez's self-titled debut album, originally released in 1960. Joan Baez is one of the most prominent figures of the '60s folk scene and a legendary musician, and activist. Growing up Mexican-American and in the Quaker faith in the 1950s instilled in Baez a strong belief in pacifism and a deep dedication to racial justice. After high school Baez moved to Boston and immediately fell in with burgeoning folk scene there, meeting the influential Odetta, and performing with Bob Gibson. It was her performance with Gibson at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival that led to her signing and this debut album, a truly fantastic piece of 1960s folk and the intro to one of the most important voices of the 20th century American left. http://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82011LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82012 ANDRE WILLIAMS : BACON FAT: FORTUNE SINGLES 1956-1957 LP 10.2017 SIDE 1: 1. Known for her tough and sultry vocals, Vartran was an early star of the ye-ye scene and these first singles show why! The James Dean Story is a 1957 documentary on the life of the legendary American film actor James Dean, depicted through dramatic use of still photography and interviews. Composed by Leith Stevens and featuring a veritable who's who of West Coast cool jazz, the moody score perfectly encapsulates the life of the brilliant and troubled heartthrob, a man whose influence on American culture of the 20th can't be exaggerated. With a band that includes Chet Baker, Bud Shank, Pepper Adams, and Don Fagerquist, with arrangements by the brilliant Johnny Mandel, you know this is going to be full of swinging and classy arrangements and soloing, and moody ballad work. It was in that year that the great journalist and musician Leonard Feather, and a Swedish promoter organized the Jazz Club U.S.A. tour, named after Feather's wildly popular radio program. Featuring Red Norvo, Sonny Clark, and more, the centerpiece of Jazz Club U.S.A. was, undoubtedly, Lady Day. Recorded at various dates across the tour, Billie's Blues shows Holiday still had it, despite the turmoil, and drug and alcohol abuse, her voice remained strong, a stunning document of one of America's greatest treasures on her first ever tour of Europe. A brilliant and prolific producer and songwriter - despite his inability to either play an instrument or read music - Meek also happened to be an occultist, paranoiac, suicidal depressive and, to top it all off, a murderer. Though only 37 at the time of his death Meek left a large body of work rivaled only by his equally inspired/insane competitor across the pond, Phil Spector. This brand new collection on Wax Love bring 18 of Meek's finest early '60s pop productions back to life on vinyl, the format they were made for. The Breakfast At Tiffanys soundtrack is probably best remembered for Audrey Hepburns legendary performance of Mancinis "Moon River" (lyrics by Johnny Mercer), which won an Academy Award for Best Song that year. "Moon River" went on to become one of the best loved songs of all time, but it first made its appearance here, in Breakfast At Tiffanys. http://www.sonic.nl/sonic_nl/mailing/813upcsh.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82022 THE MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET : S/T LP 07.2018 01. In fact, the four guys in question happen to be Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis, hence the name "Million Dollar Quartet". Not only does this recording show a glimpse of the real Elvis, but it actually stands as a musical artifact in itself. Ranging from gospel spirituals and country standards to covers of Bill Monroe and Chuck Berry songs, these four all-time rock icons play with all the ingredients that created rock and roll, just for the fun of it. A document showing the real feel of the early days of rock and roll, finally back on vinyl. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82023 B.B. Mostly recorded in King's home base of Memphis, Tennessee -- some even recorded and produced by Sam Phillips of Sun Records fame -- these sides are some of the most important and classic blues and R&B tracks of the late 1950s and early 1960s. A true workhorse, King was often playing more than 300 concerts a year at this point in his career, and it shows in these performances where a tight band is led by one of the most practiced and technically skilled guitarists of the era. King remains a huge influence on guitarists to this day and these recordings, from nearly 60 years ago, are a perfect example why. http://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82023LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82024 ELVIS PRESLEY : BIRTH OF A LEGEND: SUN SINGLES 1955-56 LP 12.2017 01. DON'T BYE BYE BABY ME The great Eddie Cochran, an early rock and roll legend rivaled only by the likes of Elvis, and his good friends Buddy, and Richie, was gone before his 22nd birthday, the victim of a taxi cab crash while on tour in England. It's hard to imagine, when listening to Cochran's body of work, that one man could record so much classic material in such a brief period of time. Cochran's first solo release came in 1956, and in less than 5 years he recorded dozens of singles, including 7 chart hits in the USA, and a number more in the UK. This comp includes some of his biggest hits as well as numerous b-side rarities, showcasing the breadth and depth of this legendary early rock and roller. http://www.sonic.nl/sonic_nl/mailing/751upcsh.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82028 LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS LP 12.2017 01. This classic LP collects some of his finest singles from 1948-1954, raw and powerful stuff that is as important as any from Hooker's entire career. Often featuring just Hooker and his guitar, or with a small backing combo, these tracks are sparse and deep, as real as the blues ever were. http://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82030LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82031 THE BEACH BOYS SURFIN' SAFARI LP 12.2017 01. MOON DAWG 12. THE SHIFT Formed in 1961 when Dennis Wilson, the only Beach Boy to regularly visit the beach, asked his brother Brian to write a song about the sport of surfing. The Beach Boys reached number 75 in national charts with their first single (the resultant song 'Surfin'') and were immediately signed to a major label. Though many debut albums in the early '60s were mainly built around a few smash-hits, the Beach Boys' 1962 full length debut on Capitol (featuring such hits as 'Surfin' Safari,' '409' and their version of the Eddie Cochran classic 'Summertime Blues') remains one of the greatest first steps in American pop culture, and a mandatory chapter in the history of rock and roll. http://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82031LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82032 JOHNNY CASH : WITH HIS HOT & BLUE GUITAR LP 12.2017 01. DOIN' MY TIME 1957's With His Hot And Blue Guitar is the debut album of country and rock and roll pioneer and all-around American hero Johnny Cash. Featuring his backing band, The Tennessee Two, the album includes all-time classics like "Hey Porter," "The Wreck of the Ol' 97," and "Folsom Prison Blues." The beginnings of an American country hero also happen to be some of the finest recordings of his career, absolutely stellar Southern Americana. http://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82032LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82033 RAY CHARLES RAY CHERLES LP 12.2017 01. AIN'T THAT LOVE 02. DROWN IN MY OWN TEARS 03. COME BACK BABY 04. SINNER'S PRAYER 05. FUNNY (BUT I STILL LOVE YOU) 06. LOSING HAND 07. A FOOL FOR YOU 08. HALLELUJAH I LOVE HER SO 09. MESS AROUND 10. THIS LITTLE GIRL OF MINE 11. MARY ANN 12. GREENBACKS 13. DON'T YOU KNOW 14. I GOT A WOMAN Perhaps the greatest crossover artist that ever was, it is impossible to overstate the impact that Ray Charles had on the evolution of both R&B and rock 'n' roll. Charles' distinctive style transcended genres and influenced musicians from every musical background and from every corner of the globe, but it was during the mid -fifties that Charles really began to rule the R&B charts. His legendary debut LP - originally released in 1957 (and later renamed Hallelujah! I Love Her So) for Atlantic - was essentially a collection of those hit singles. In 1955 Ray had his first number one hit, 'I've Got A Woman,' followed by his second and third number one hits, 'A Fool For You,' and 'Drown in My Own Tears,' over just the next few months. Almost all of the remaining tracks on the album were also top ten hits from that same period, including 'Greenbacks,' 'Hallelujah I Love Her So,' and 'This Little Girl of Mine.' This was undoubtedly the era that defined the legend." http://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82033LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82037 SAM COOKE : One Night Stand! Recorded January 12, LP 04.2018 1963 At The Harlem Square Club In Miami Wax Love present One Night Stand!, a reissue of Sam Cooke's Live At The Harlem Square Club 1963 originally released in 1985. This stunning live date from the great Sam Cooke at Miami's Harlem Square Club went unreleased for years because his label thought it was too raw and raucous, a complaint that hardly seems fair today as this is now known as one of the great live albums of all-time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82038 ELVIS PRESLEY : The King As Seen On TV! The Dorsey LP 04.2018 Brothers Show & The Ed Sullivan Show 1957 Wax Love present The King As Seen On TV! a collection of Elvis Presley TV appearances in 1957. In his first nationally televised appearance, on the big band leaders Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey's TV variety show, Elvis Presley shocked the country with his sultry and sensational version of all-time classics like "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Blue Suede Shoes". And, although the Dorsey Brothers Show might have been his first national appearance, it was the legendary Ed Sullivan performance that truly put him on the map, so to speak. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82039 THE BEATLES WORK IN PROGRESS LP 01.2018 ['MORE HITS FROM THE STAR CLUB, HAMBURG 1962'] SIDE 1: 1. Little Queenie 2. Falling In Love Again 3. Sheila 4. Be-Bop-A-Lula 5. Hallelujah I Love Her So 6. Red Sails In The Sunset SIDE 2: 1. Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby 2. Matchbox 3. Talkin 'Bout You 4. Shimmy Shake 5. Long Tall Sally 6. I Remember You Beatles played five residencies in Hamburg between 1960 and 1962, the last of which is captured here in December of 1962, just a few months after Ringo Starr replaced Pete Best and finalized the lineup that would soon be known as The Fab Four. The group would soon be signed to Parlophone and the rest, as they say, is history. This is part two of two historical live recordings that capture the band just before they rocketed to stardom. A truly important piece of Beatle history. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82040 ORNETTE COLEMAN : AT THE TOWN HALL, DEC. 1962 LP 05.2018 01. DOUGHNUT 02. SADNESS 03. DEDICATION TO POETS AND WRITERS 04. THE ARK Wax Love present a reissue of Ornette Coleman's At The Town Hall, December 1962, originally released as Town Hall - 1962 in 1965. Ornette Coleman's Town Hall show from December 1962 is the stuff legends are made of. He'd already made a name for himself with incredible releases on Atlantic including The Shape Of Jazz To Come (1959) and Free Jazz (1961), but to some extent this live date feels like his free -jazz coming out party. A true artistic statement of pure free energy, this live date is both totally unhinged and completely in control. A necessary piece of free jazz history on Wax Love. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82041 BO DIDDLEY BO DIDDLEY LP 02.2018 01. BO DIDDLEY 02. I'M A MAN 03. BRING IT TO JEROME 04. BEFORE YOU ACCUSE ME 05. HEY'S BO DIDDLEY 06. DEAREST DARLING 07. HUSH YOUR MOUTH 08. "SAY BOSSMAN" 09. "DIDDLEY DADDY" 10. "DIDDEY WAH DIDDEY" 11. WHO DO YOU LOVE 12. PRETTY THING The full-length debut by the man known as the originator of rock and roll should need no introduction. Though never a top seller on par with his Chess Records rival Chuck Berry, Bo produced a catalog of classics to compete with all but a handful of the best early rockers, pushing rock and roll to its funkiest ever. The Bo Diddley beat--that 'bomp, ba-bomp-bomp, bomp-bomp' to which the pop-garage 1965 hit 'I Want Candy' by the Strangeloves owes everything--is one of rock and roll's bedrock rhythms, showing up in the work of Buddy Holly, the Velvet Underground, and the Rolling Stones to name but a few. An all time classic that stretched back as far as Africa for its roots, and looked as far into the future as rap, while still remaining a milestone in the transition from blues to early rock and roll. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82042 RAY CHARLES GENIUS+SOUL=JAZZ LP 02.2018 01. FROM THE HEART 02. IVE GOT NEWS FOR YOU 03. MOANIN 04. LETS GO 05. ONE MINT JULEP 06. IM GONNA MOVE TO THE OUTSKIRTS OF TOWN 07. STOMPIN ROOM ONLY 08. MISTER C. 09. STRIKE UP THE BAND 10. BIRTH OF THE BLUES Recorded in 1961 under the direction of the legendary Quincy Jones and featuring members of Count Basies group as well as crack New York sessions players, Genius + Soul = Jazz is one of the finest records in Charles storied career. Lushly arranged and impeccably played, the group and performances are the perfect backdrop for Charles whiskey smooth vocals. A crucial and essential piece of work from one of the 20th centurys most celebrated performers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82043 ELLA FITZGERALD/LOUIS ARMSTRONG : ELLA & LOUIS LP 02.2018 01. CHEEK TO CHEEK 10. THE NEARNESS OF YOU 11. APRIL IN PARIS Recorded at the famed Capitol Studios in Hollywood in 1956, this was the first, and by far the best, of 3 albums Ella and Louis recorded in the late 1950s. Comprised of classic ballads selected by the famed Norman Granz, Ella and Louis charm is undeniable. A truly iconic jazz vocal album backed by The Oscar Peterson Quartet, Ella and Louis is guaranteed to please listeners of any age. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82044 BILL EVANS TRIO MOON BEAMS LP 02.2018 01. RE: PERSON I KNEW 02. POLKA DOTS AND MOONBEAMS 03. I FALL IN LOVE TOO EASY 04. STAIRWAY TO THE STARS 05. IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW 06. IT MIGHT AS WELL BE SPRING 07. IN LOVE IN VAIN 08. VERY EARLY Following the untimely death of his beloved bassist, Scott Le Faro, Bill Evans was despondent, taking a several month hiatus from performing. Moon Beams was the first Bill Evans Trio album recorded and released with new bassist, Chuck Israels, and a beautiful return to form. Comprised of gorgeous ballads, Moon Beams title is perfectly apt, a late night dreamlike album that subdues the listener. Truly gorgeous piano jazz from the absolute master of the trio. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82045 SAM COOKE PEACE IN THE VALLEY LP 02.2018 01. PEACE IN THE VALLEY 02. JESUS GAVE ME WATER 03. COME LET US GO BACK TO GOD 04. ANY DAY NOW 05. LISTEN NOW! HE'LL MAKE A WAY 06. JESUS PAID THE DEBT 07. I HAVE A FRIEND ABOVE ALL OTHERS 08. COME AND GO TO THAT LAND 09. LISTEN NOW! JUST ANOTHER DAY 10. HOW FAR AM I FROM CANAAN 11. LISTEN NOW! IT WON'T BE VERY LONG 12. HE'S MY ROCK (WAIT ON JESUS) 13. LISTEN NOW! UNTIL JESUS CALLS ME HOME 14. END OF MY JOURNEY Collecting some of his finest gospel sides with The Soul Stirrers, Peace In The Valley is not just the starting point of Sam Cookes iconic career, it is also some of the most beautiful music ever put to tape. Though the songs are religious in nature, one can easily hear the architecture of Cookes later secular R&B work in these sides. Soulful and sanctified music from one of the finest voices in the history of 20th century popular music. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82046 DICK DALE & HIS DELTONES : SURFER'S CHOICE LP 02.2018 01. LET'S GO TRIPPIN' Richard Anthony Monsour, born May 4, 1937 - better known to the world as The King Of The Surf Guitar, Dick Dale - released this, his debut album, in 1962. Featuring his backing group, The Del-Tones, Surfer's Choice, is an absolute, stone cold, classic and the first ever LP document of the brand new phenomenon of surf rock, a genre that Dale, an avid surfer himself, singlehandedly created. An essential piece of surf rock history, back in print on Wax Love. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WVL 82047 MILES DAVIS SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN LP 02.2018 01. BASIN STREET BLUES 02. SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN 03. I FALL IN LOVE TOO EASILY 04. SO NEAR, SO FAR 05. BABY WON'T YOU PLEASE COME HOME 06. JOSHUA Late 1962 and early 1963 were a period of transition for Miles Davis. He had health issues and his original quintet from the 1950s was on its last legs. He played with a variety of hired hands while working on assembling a new quintet. Seven Steps To Heaven collected various recordings from LA and New York, and the New York recordings are particularly interesting because they feature the 17 year old Tony Williams, as well as Ron Carter, and Herbie Hancock, 3 of the brilliant players that would make up Davis working Quintet for the next several years. While comprised of various players and sessions, Seven Steps To Heaven is still a beautiful album from the legendary trumpet player well worthy of inclusion among his finest works. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82048 JOHN COLTRANE THE BELIEVER LP 02.2018 01. THE BELIEVER 02. NAKATINI SERENADE 03. DO I LOVE YOU BECAUSE YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL The Believer collects recordings from 1958 from tenor master John Coltrane. Featuring longtime collaborators Red Garland and Paul Chambers, as well as two of the finest trumpet players to ever grace a jazz record, Donald Byrd and Freddie Hubbard, the album begins with longtime Coltrane collaborator McCoy Tyners title composition. Though its a piecemeal album, Coltrane is in top form and his soloing on tenor at the time was unparalleled. Another great one from Trane. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82049 HERBIE HANCOCK INVENTIONS & DIMENSIONS LP 02.2018 01. SUCCOTASH 02. TRIANGLE 03. JACK RABBIT 04. MIMOSA 05. A JUMP AHEAD Inventions & Dimensions is the third album Herbie Hancock ever released as a leader and proof that he was not an artist who was willing to be pigeonholed. Featuring a quartet made up of a bassist and two latin percussionists, Inventions & Dimensions explores the possibility of latin percussion outside the context of a latin jazz album. Comprised of post-bop and modal compositions all from the pen of Hancock, this is a beautiful album that shows the promise of a young and confident pianist and composer who would blossom into one of the most celebrated talents in jazz history. Essential. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82050 JAMES BROWN TELL ME WHAT YOU'RE GONNA DO LP 02.2018 01. JUST YOU AND ME DARLING 02. I LOVE YOU, YES I DO 03. I DON'T MIND 04. COME OVER HERE 05. THE BELLS 06. LOVE DON'T LOVE NOBODY 07. DANCIN' LITTLE THING 08. LOST SOMEONE 09. AND I DO JUST WHAT I WANT 10. SO LONG 11. YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO 12. TELL ME WHAT YOU'RE GONNA DO The 4th James Brown LP, originally released in 1961, is one of the harder titles in his early discography to find. Though it doesnt contain any of his massive, instantly recognizable hits, its regarded among collectors as one of the finest pure R&B albums of its era. And it includes some of his best charting singles such as "Just You And Me Darling", and "Lost Someone". Beg, scream, & shout along with the Hardest Working Man In Show Business, The Godfather of Soul himself: Mr. JAMES BROWN! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82051 ROBERT JOHNSON ME AND THE DEVIL LP 05.2018 Wax Love present Me And The Devil, a collection of some of the finest moments of the only two known recording sessions by the King of Delta Blues, Robert Johnson, made in Dallas and San Antonio in 1936 and 1937. A man whose poorly documented life and death at 27 have given rise to much legend in the last 75+ years, Johnson had little or none public recognition for his work in his lifetime. Rumored to have sold his soul at the crossroads to achieve success, Robert Johnson lived his whole life playing at street corners and Saturday night dances, writing the soundtrack for half a century of rock culture to come. Featuring all-time classics such as "Crossroad Blues", "Love In Vain", and "Phonograph Blues", this is mandatory for all early folk and blues aficionados. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82052 ROBERT JOHNSON LOVE IN VAIN LP 05.2018 Though the legendary blues musician Robert Johnson was only known to have recorded twice in his brief lifetime, in 1936 and 1937 in Texas, his output in those two brief days so long ago was both endlessly influential and surprisingly prolific. Beyond the classic sides that were released on 78 rpm at the time, there were numerous unreleased outtakes and alternate recordings that went uncovered for decades after their recording. Collected here are 12 alternate takes including essentials like "Crossroad Blues", "Drunken Hearted Man", "Ramblin' On My Mind", and more. Essential and rare Robert Johnson sides back in print on Wax Love. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82053 JOHN LEE HOOKER MAMBO CHILLUN LP 02.2018 [VEE-JAY SINGLES 1955-1958] SIDE 1: 1. For the next 7 years Hooker cut some of the most explosive and legendary blues sides of his career and solidified his position as one of the greatest performers of the electric blues era. While many of his earlier sides featured only Hooker on guitar and vocals, his Vee-Jay sides feature a full rocking rhythm section. This first volume spans the years 1955-1958. https://www.forcedexposure.com/Product.aspx?CatalogNo=WLV.82053LP --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82054 HOHN LEE HOOKER BOOM BOOM LP 06.2018 [VEE JAY SINGLES 1959-1962] Following stints with Modern and Chess, legendary blues man John Lee Hooker joined forces with the esteemed Vee-Jay label out of Chicago in 1955. For the next seven years Hooker cut some of the most explosive and legendary blues sides of his career and solidified his position as one of the greatest performers of the electric blues era. By the 1960s the folk and blues revival would make international stars of many blues performers but at the time of these Vee-Jay recordings this was music made by African -Americans mostly for the African-American market, from Chicago to the South to Los Angeles and New York and points between, and Vee-Jay was one of the first and most successful African-American owned record labels. While many of his earlier sides feat. only Hooker on guitar and vocals, his Vee-Jay sides feature a full rocking rhythm section. Essential sides from one of the all-time greatest American performers of the 20th century. This first volume, Mambo Chillun, spans the years 1955-1958, and includes the titular "Mambo Chillun" a play on his classic hit, "Boogie Chillun", as well as 16 more great late '50s blues sides. This second volume, Boom Boom, spans the years 1959-1962 and includes classics like "Boom Boom", "Want Ad Blues", and 16 more great Hooker blues joints. https://www.forcedexposure.com/Product.aspx?CatalogNo=WLV.82054LP --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82055 JOHNNY CASH BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS LP 05.2018 01. ROUGHNECK Like many of Johnny Cash's albums from the late 50s and early 60s, Blood, Sweat and Tears is a concept album. This time around, for his 15th long player, The Man in Black sings a suite of songs about the plight of the working man. Featuring The Carter Family on backing vocals and longtime guitarist Luther Perkins, this is a killer album that features two classics he'd later record on the legendary Folsom Prison sessions ("The Legend of John Henry's Hammer" and "Busted"). Another classic from Johnny Cash on Wax Love. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82056 ELVIS PRESLEY GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS! LP 05.2018 01. Known amongst collectors as "The First Gaslight Tape", the sound quality on these recordings is fantastic, and it holds up as one of the best early Bob Dylan live recordings in both sound quality and performance. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82058 JOHNNY CASH : LOUISIANA HAYRIDE RECORDINGS LP 05.2018 01. BUSTED The late, great, man in black made appearances on the legendary radio and TV show broadcast out of Shreveport, LA in 1955, 1959, 1962, and 1963. This LP collects recordings from all of those performances. Though we all know and love his studio hits, Cash was often at his best in front of a live audience and his performances here leave no doubt about that. With stunning performances from his Tennessee Two, the loose, humorous vibe of these recordings highlight Cash's best side. Absolutely essential. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82059 SCREAMIN' JAY HAWKINS : I PUT A SPELL ON YOU LP 06.2018 [B-SIDES AND RARITIES] 01. THE PAST A comprehensive collection of the early, pre-debut LP singles from one of the most controversial front-men of early rock and roll. With his classically-trained bass -baritone singing voice, Screamin' Jay Hawkins conjured up ghoulish images both on stage and on his records. Hawkins, evoking voodoo images and using bone-rattling sound effects, simultaneously entertained and bewildered rock'n'roll fans. Featuring his all-time classic "I Put a Spell on You," along with a batch of hard-to-find classics from his Okeh Records days. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82060 BOB DYLAN LONG TIME GONE LP 05.2018 01. THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN' After the release of his self-titled debut in 1962, Dylan spent the rest of that year and 1963 working on songwriting demos of his various publishing company clients. This wonderful LP compiles the best songwriting demos from that fruitful period. Along with early versions of stone cold classics like "Masters Of War", "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright", and "The Times They Are-A-Changin'" this collection of a young Dylan at the start of his brilliant half-century plus career also includes long-forgotten beautiful obscurities like "All Over You", and "Walkin' Down The Line". Essential early demos from America's greatest 20th century songwriter. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82061 MIRIAM MAKEBA : MAMA AFRIKA-THE EARLY YEARS LP 06.2018 01. This LP collects some of that brilliant early material that launched her career and made her one of the most beloved voices of the 20th century. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82062 SCREAMIN' JAY HAWKINS : BAPTIZE ME IN WINE LP 06.2018 01. LITTLE DEMON (ALTERNATE TAKE) 18. I PUT A SPELL ON YOU (ALTERNATE TAKE) 19. ALLIGATOR WINE (ALTERNATE TAKE) In a long line of rock and roll outsiders hailing from Ohio, Screamin' Jay Hawkins may very well be the first. Born and raised in Cleveland, Hawkins' 1956 single 'I Put A Spell On You' is one of the most instantly recognizable songs in the history of R 'n' B and rock. Baptize Me in Wine compiles that classic track along with 18 other specimens of pure, unhinged, guttural R 'n' B madness into what is sure to be considered the definitive Hawkins' collection on the vinyl market. Most tracks were originally released as singles on the Okeh label except for the last four, which are outtakes from the first album. Before Devo, before Pere Ubu, before Guided By Voices, there was Screamin' Jay. There really must be something in the water out there. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82063 BILLIE HOLIDAY : AT JAZZ AT THE PHILHARMONIC LP 04.2018 01. LOVER MAN Jazz at The Philharmonic was a concert series produced by the legendary Norman Granz all the way from 1944 to 1983. Billie Holiday performed several times in the 1940s and 50s and was even a member of the touring troupe late in her career. These sides were recorded in 1945 and 1946 with backing from legends like Illinois Jacquet, Lester Young, and Barney Kessel. Recorded at the height of her technical prowess and before her hard living affected her voice, these performances from Los Angeles and New York City are some of the finest live recordings of her career. Absolute essentials from a jazz legend. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82064 NINA SIMONE NINA AT NEWPORT LP 04.2018 01. TROUBLE IN MIND 02. BLUES FOR PORGY 03. LITTLE LIZA JANE 04. YOU'D BE SO NICE TO COME HOME TO 05. FLO ME LA 06. NINA'S BLUES 07. IN THE EVENING BY THE MOONLIGHT When this album was recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960, Nina Simone had just had her first Top 20 hit with "I Loves You, Porgy", but the "Porgy" found here (written by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields, most famous for "I Can't Give You Anything But Love") is actually a continuation of Gershwin's original version of the story. Other highlights include "Flo Me La", an African work chant, and "Little Liza Jane", an African American folk song. A truly marvelous live performance from one of the most original voices in 20th century music. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82065 CHARLES MINGUS : PITHECANTHTOPUS ERECTUS LP 04.2018 01. PITHECANTHROPUS ERECTUS 02. A FOGGY DAY 03. PROFILE OF JACKIE 04. LOVE CHANT 1956's Pithecanthropus Erectus is the Charles Mingus record where he really begins to take hold of his own personal vision of how jazz music could look. After cutting his teeth on the L.A. scene and touring with Louis Armstrong and Lionel Hampton, Mingus moved to New York, began Debut Records with Max Roach, and entered into the most productive and creative decade of his career. This album is held in the same esteem as Mingus Ah-Um and The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady among jazz aficionados, and one need listen no further than the 10 minute title track, a tone poem about the rise and fall of man which includes one of the earliest free jazz / improvisation segments put to tape. Absolutely essential jazz from the late great Charles Mingus on Wax Love. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82066 MILES DAVIS PORGY AND BESS LP 04.2018 01. Miles Davis was one of the all-time greatest interpreters of standards and with the arrangements from Evans, this album might be the best example of Davis' interpretive prowess. A beautiful piece of 1950s jazz on Wax Love. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82067 HOWLIN' WOLF HOWLIN' WOLF LP 04.2018 01. OLD DEVIL MOON It Could Happen to You was originally released in 1958 and follows the similar style of his previous vocal records in which he updates old standards to a contemporary cool jazz setting. Unlike previous releases by 1958 Baker's voice had reached a stunning maturity and his trumpet playing is also at a near peak in quality. The song selection is impeccable and everything about this record just oozes coolness. One of the finest releases in Chet Baker's storied career. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82071 BIG BILL BROONZY WHO'S SORRY NOW LP 06.2018 01. Before his recording career began in Chicago in the 1920s he had already been married, worked as a sharecropper, a Pullman porter, a cook, and served for two years in World War I. After cutting some of the most legendary blues 78s in the '20s and '30s, Despite some success Broonzy still had to work odd jobs through most of the '40s to survive and by the time the folk revival and Pete Seeger found him, he only had a few years left. This collection documents those final years, from 1951 to 1958, where Broonzy was touring Europe and finally receiving some of the worldwide acclaim he had long deserved. Though these recordings come at the end of his life, his guitar skill is honed and his voice like a fine aged whiskey. Another incredible collection of American blues from Wax Love. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82072 SON HOUSE THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE LP 08.2018 01. It wasn't until the Library of Congress and Fisk University recorded him at Klack's Store, Lake Cormorant, MI, in August 1941. and again in July of 1942 at Robbinsonville, Mississippi. Those recordings have come to define his career and are a hallmark of the blues genre. Wax Love presents a glorious retrospective compilation of those recordings, with some of his most well known tunes like "Shetland Pony Blues", "Low Down Dirty Dog Blues", and "Walking Blues." She died at 47 of liver cancer after years of alcohol abuse and pill addiction, and it's reported that her last words were "Every damn thing you do in this life, you have to pay for." While that's a hard way to live, her pain and emotion rang true in song, and there's not a better or more gut wrenching torch singer in history than Ms. Piaf. Collecting some of her most famous recordings, incl. the immortal "La Vie en Rose", "Tout Fout le Camp", and "Le Vagabond", this is a brilliant retrospective of her career and a perfect entry point into the world of one of the greatest vocalists of the 20th Century. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82074 GENE VINCENT & HIS BLUE CAPS : BLUEJEAN BOP LP 06.2018 01. Patton performed with and at times mentored such blues legends as Robert Johnson, and Chester Burnett (aka Howlin' Wolf). On Lord I'm Discouraged: The Gennett Records Recording Session, Richmond, IN June 1929 Wax Love collects all the recordings Patton made for the legendary label, the same label that released early jazz from Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington and tons of classic old-time and blues sessions. Erma Franklin was born in 1938 in Shelby, MS, but was raised -- with her sisters, Aretha and Carolyn -- in Detroit, MI. The son of the legendary preacher, gospel musician, and civil rights activist Rev. C.L. Franklin, Erma grew up singing in the church, like so many other R&B and soul greats of the time. After recording backing vocals with her sister, Erma got the chance in 1962 to cut her debut LP. Though she would only record one more album, Soul Sister (VAMPI 029CD, 2011) and retire from music entirely in the 1970s, this debut shows a singer just as talented as her more famous sister. A husky, soulful belter of a voice is showcased here, with all the tracks from the original album plus more. https://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82079LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WVL 82080 B.B. KING EASY LISTENING BLUES LP 12.2018 Wax Love presents a reissue of B.B. King's Easy Listening Blues, originally released in 1962. A bit of an anomaly in the B.B. King catalog, Easy Listening Blues is all instrumental tracks in the guitar-driven pop-blues style of early Freddie King. Originally released on Crown (part of the RPM/Modern/Kent umbrella that King had recorded for since nearly the beginning of his career more than ten years prior), this collection was aimed at the burgeoning white market for R&B and blues and is more pop-oriented than previous releases but that lends a charm to these recordings not often found on other King releases. Easy Listening Blues is killer R&B/blues instrumentals from one of the greatest guitarists of the 20th Century. https://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82080LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WVL 82081 THE JAZZ CRUSADERS FREEDOM SOUND LP 11.2018 01. COON Formed out of the ashes of several different Houston, Texas groups in the late '50s the core four of The Jazz Crusaders - Joe Sample, Stix Hooper, Wilton Felder, and Wayne Henderson - all relocated together to Los Angeles in 1960 and quickly signed a recording contract with Pacific Jazz Records. Freedom Sound is their debut album, from 1961, and a great introduction to their 1960s hard-bop soul-jazz sound. Rounding out their trombone-sax-piano-drums core with killer guitar work from Roy Gaines and the bass of the prolific Jimmy Bond, this is soul-jazz mixed with a taste of West Coast cool and an essential piece of The Jazz Crusaders' extensive catalog. http://www.sonic.nl/sonic_nl/mailing/846upcsh.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82082 BLUE MITCHELL BLUE SOUL LP 11.2018 01. Though she reached more widespread notoriety across the world in the '50s and '60s thanks to the folk/blues revival and her beloved status among UK blues and rock musicians, it's her early recordings from the late '30s and early-mid '40s that are the most brilliant, visceral, and emotional of her career. Up Above My Head compiles 18 of those amazing gospel and R&B sides into one place. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82085 ELVIR PRESLEY : ELVIS' GOLDEN RECORDS LP 12.2018 Wax Love presents a reissue of Elvis Presley's Elvis' Golden Records, originally issued in 1958. Hooker recorded for many labels throughout the 1950s but it was with Chess that he cut his most memorable and famous sides. This album is the beginning of that fruitful relationship and features simply Hooker's beautiful blues vocals, raw guitar playing, and foot stomping to keep the beat. Discovered during the folk and blues revival of the late '50s and early '60s Lipscomb would record regularly until his death in 1976 at the age of 80. A tenant farmer for most of his life, Lipscomb was the son of a former slave father and half-Choctaw Indian mother. He began playing guitar early in his life and spent most of his life performing at "Saturday night suppers" hosted by local friends or, often, by himself and his wife. After his discovery, Lipscomb would go on to perform at the first ever Monterey Folk Festival in 1963 as well as at numerous clubs of the folk-revival, most notable The Ash Grove in Los Angeles. Collected here are his earliest recordings, from 1960, and they are some of the most beautiful and transcendent of Texas folk-blues. Crucial recordings from one of the greatest individual voices of the folk and blues revival. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 105 LEADBELLY : KING OF THE 12-STRING GUITAR LP 12.2018 01. Born on a plantation in Louisiana in 1888, Leadbelly got his start as a teenager performing in the red-light district of Shreveport. "Discovered" by the legendary folklorists John and Alan Lomax while Leadbelly was serving time in Angola state prison for attempted murder. They recorded him while in prison and in 1934, at the age of 46, made these recordings, the first commercial recordings of his career. Featuring a wide repertoire of folk and blues songs along with his powerful voice and unique guitar style, these tracks are absolute cornerstones of American folk and blues music and some of the greatest tracks he ever cut. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 106 BLIND BOY FULLER EAST COAST PIEDMONT STYLE LP 12.2018 01. JUST YOU, JUST ME Recorded in a couple of days in June 1961 in Hollywood, this fine album documents the historical meeting between Genius Ray Charles and the wonderful Betty Carter, one of the greatest female Jazz singers of all times. A powerful duet combination with Ray's deep-sweet tone in almost sensual relation with Carter's highly pitched and energetic vocals. The two literally fly on top of a series of sophisticated string arrangements and some highly swinging big band charts. Among the players are some of Ray's close collaborators such as reed men Hank Crawford and David "Fathead" Newman. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82108 LES BAXTER SPACE ESCAPADE LP 02.2019 01. ON GREEN DOLPHIN STREET 02. WALKIN' 03. THE THEME 04. YESTERDAYS/AUTUMN LEAVES/WHAT'S NEW/MOONLIGHT IN VERMONT 05. RIFFTIDE Recorded by the German WDR radio at the Apollo Theater in Dusseldorf on Monday, March 18, 1960 this session documents a precise step in Coltrane's career. While on tour in Europe with the Miles Davis quintet, the young but already mature tenor saxophonist took the chance to lead a quartet session with the Davis rhythm section, a hard swinging combo with pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist extraordinaire Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82110 ORNETTE COLEMAN CHANGE OF THE CENTURY LP 03.2019 01. RAMBLIN' 02. FREE 03. THE FACE OF THE BASS 04. FORERUNNER 05. BIRD FOOD 06. UNA MUY BONITA 07. CHANGE OF THE CENTURY The second album by Ornette Colemans legendary quartet featuring Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Billy Higgins, Change of the Century is every bit the equal of the monumental The Shape of Jazz to Come, showcasing a group that was growing ever more confident in its revolutionary approach and the chemistry in the bandmembers interplay. When Coleman concentrates on melody, his main themes are catchier, and when the pieces emphasize group interaction, the improvisation is freer. Two of Colemans most memorable classic compositions are here in their original forms -- "Ramblin" has all the swing and swagger of the blues, and "Una Muy Bonita" is oddly disjointed, its theme stopping and starting in totally unexpected places. An American free-jazz classic from one of the biggest names in the genre. http://www.sonic.nl/sonic_nl/mailing/908upcsv.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82111 CHARLES MINGUS THE ELDRIDGE SESSION LP 03.2019 01. MYSTERIOUS BLUES 02. BODY AND SOUL 03. WRAP YOUR TROUBLES IN DREAMS 04. R & R 05. WRAP YOUR TROUBLES IN DREAMS (ALT) 06. ME AND YOU The great Bassist and band leader Charles Mingus cut some of his most exciting and rewarding recordings in 1960. Taped during the apex of Mingus creativity, shortly after masterstroke Mingus Ah Um, just before his brilliant Oh Yeah, and in the same year as the classic Blues & Roots, this incredible session showcase such stars as Eric Dolphy, Roy Eldridge, and Tommy Flanagan. Mingus' arrangements are, as always, top notch with an unparalleled understanding of space and melody, and the playing is without doubt up to his standards. Mingus is one of the greatest jazz minds of the 20th Century and these sessions are another fine example of his genius. http://www.sonic.nl/sonic_nl/mailing/908upcsv.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82112 DOROTHY ASHBY DOROTHY ASHBY LP 03.2019 01. LONELY MELODY 02. SECRET LOVE 03. GLOOMY SUNDAY 04. SATIN DOLL 05. JOHN R. 06. LI'L DARLIN' 07. BOOZE 08. DJANGO 09. YOU STEPPED OUT OF A DREAM 10. STRANGER IN PARADISE Dorothy Ashby was perhaps not Detroit's most famous female jazz harpist as that distinction belongs to Alice Coltrane but she was notably the first and a trailblazer who overcame massive setbacks throughout her nearly 30 year recording career. Playing on an instrument not usually associated with jazz, in a male dominated field, Ashby is a true and amazing original. Originally released in 1962, and with the help of a rhythm section of Herman Wright on bass and John Tooley on drums, Dorothy Ashby is one of her earliest titles as a leader and a beautiful piece of innovative mid century jazz. A mix of originals and tastefully selected covers like Ellington's "Satin Doll" and Neal Hefti's "Li'l Darlin'" this is another lost jazz classic resuscitated by Wax Love. http://www.sonic.nl/sonic_nl/mailing/908upcsv.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82113 CHARLES MINGUS : RIGHT NOW-LIVE AT JAZZ WORKSHOPS LP 03.2019 01. NEW FABLES 02. MEDITATION (FOR A PAIR OF WIRE CUTTERS) With Clifford Jordan on tenor, John Handy on alto, Jane Getz on piano, and Dannie Richmond on drums, Charles Mingus went into San Francisco and whipped up a storm. This LP contains two compositions over 23-minutes each: "New Fables" and "Meditation (For A Pair Of Wire Cutters)." "New Fables" features a ten-minute solo from Jordan, some fine ensemble work, and a solo encounter from Handy. Mingus changes the mood he sees fit, and one would describe these different styles as avant-garde (in 1964), blues, flamenco, and straight-ahead jazz. Handys work is stirring, deeply imaginative, technically thrilling, and a harbinger of what was to come the following year at Monterey. In "Meditations" Mingus bowing the bass in the cello range with that certain sad quality, Jane Getz playing loose, free, and exciting, much as she does today, and a moment where Mingus joins Getz for a fourhanded piano romp. The piece is a flowing ballad, but there are constant changes throughout(...) IF EVER I WOULD LEAVE YOU 02. JUNGOSO 03. BLUESONGO 04. THE NIGHT HAS A THOUSAND EYES 05. BROWNSKIN GIRL While so much attention is paid to his titles on Blue Note, Contemporary, and Prestige, Sonny Rollins' RCA sessions from the early '60s are some of his finest sessions and they don't get nearly the attention they deserve. In 1962 alone he released two classic titles, The Bridge and this album, What's New? Featuring Jim Hall on guitar and Candido on percussion among other heavy hissing session musicians, What's New? is particularly remarkable for the Rollins' originals including the blazing, Latin influenced "Jungoso" which features one of the most forceful solos of his career. A beautiful bossa-inspired bit of early '60s jazz that stands tall among the catalog of one of the true pillars of the tenor saxophone. http://www.sonic.nl/sonic_nl/mailing/908upcsv.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82115 JOHN COLTRANE MY FAVOROTE THINGS LP 03.2019 01. MY FAVORITE THINGS 02. EVERYTIME WE SAY GOODBYE 03. SUMMERTIME 04. BUT NOT FOR ME Credit for this album is partially due to Miles Davis, who had somewhat recently purchased Coltrane his first soprano saxophone, previously it had been little used in jazz. This 1961 album also seems to fully mark Coltrane's transformation into modal jazz, another Davis influence, and his modal take on the the classic standard, "My Favorite Things", from The Sound Of Music soundtrack, remains one of the more iconic jazz songs in history. Rounded out by 3 more standards, performed in modal interpretations that completely redefined the meaning of a "standards" album, My Favorite Things, is one of the many transcendent jazz albums the legendary John Coltrane is responsible for. http://www.sonic.nl/sonic_nl/mailing/908upcsv.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82116 BILLIE HOLIDAY LADY SINGS THE BLUES LP 03.2019 01. I THOUGHT ABOUT YOU Though her late career was marred by addiction and personal issues, and her chipper voice had grown raspy and hardened by the years and the pain, Lady Sings The Blues has come to be regarded as one of the finest albums of her career, despite a lack of critical enthusiasm at the time. Originally released in 1956, concurrently with her autobiography, Holiday was joined for these sessions by tenor saxophonist Paul Quinichette, trumpeters Charlie Shavers and Harry Edison, pianist Wynton Kelly, and guitarists Kenny Burrell and Barney Kessel. A beautiful, smoky, and slow-burning piece of jazz vocal history. Essential. http://www.sonic.nl/sonic_nl/mailing/908upcsv.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82117 CHET BAKER IN MILAN LP 04.2019 01. MY OLD FLAME The king of West Coast Jazz caught in Milan during his first European trip. The band assembled for these sessions features some of the best Italian Classic Jazz musicians of the time. The basic quartet includes Chet Baker (trumpet) Renato Sellani (piano) Franco Cerri (bass) and Gene Victory (drums). However, that unit is often upgraded to a sextet with Glauco Masetti (alto sax) and Gianno Basso (tenor sax). The cool spirit of Baker's music lives through some inspired fluid performances of American Bop classics such as Miles Davis' "Tune Up" and Charlie Parker's "Cheryl Blues." http://www.sonic.nl/sonic_nl/mailing/910upcsh.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82118 HANK MOBLEY WORKOUT LP 04.2019 01. UNDECIDED Ray Charles' 1957 album The Great Ray Charles is his second long player for the legendary Atlantic Records. An instrumental jazz album, it was released 2 years before Charles became an international superstar with the hit recording "What'd I Say". Though Charles was already nearly a decade deep into his recording career he'd yet to have a massive hit and was a difficult artist to pin down as his tastes ranged from jazz to pop to R&B. Featuring longtime band member David "Fathead" Newman and with help from the arranging and songwriting genius Quincy Jones, this is a beautiful, swinging, and laid-back jazz album necessary for any fans of Ray. http://www.sonic.nl/sonic_nl/mailing/910upcsh.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82120 THE INCREDIBLE JIMMY SMITH : BACK AT THE CHICKEN SHACK LP 04.2019 01. The album features one of the earlier Quartet lineups, with Bob Bates on bass and Joe Dodge on drums. The album contains Watermelon Man, Hancock's first big hit, the one we all know as a classic standard in the history of Jazz and popular music. In one word: Essential! http://www.sonic.nl/sonic_nl/mailing/917upcsh.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82127 JOHN COLTRANE WELLS FARGO LP 05.2019 01. WELLS FARGO 02. E.F.F.P.H. 03. RHODOMAGNETICS 04. COUNT DOWN 05. WEST 42ND STREET 06. SNUFFY 07. ANEDAC 08. B.J Here is a 32 year old John Coltrane sharing a studio recording session with trumpeter Wilbur Harden and a bunch of young lions such as Tommy Flanagan (piano) Doug Watkins (bass) and Louis Hayes (drums), plus Curtis Fuller (trombone) Ali Jackson (bass) Howard Williams (piano) and Art Taylor (drums) on couple of tracks. in 1958 Coltrane was deeply exploring the Hard Bop idiom, that's when the saxophonist was still playing around with Monk and Davis and just before he would begin leading his own groups. A fine document! http://www.sonic.nl/sonic_nl/mailing/917upcsh.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82128 MILES DAVIS BIRTH OF COOL LP 05.2019 01. DARN THAT DREAM The music conceived by Miles Davis and Gil Evans between 1949 and 1950, and released in 1957 on Capitol records marks an important new step in Jazz. Featuring an unusual line up and innovative classical oriented arrangements, this historical album represents the birth of a new form of Jazz. For the occasion Davis and Evans display a stellar nonet including, among others, Lee Konitz (alto sax), Gerry Mulligan (baritone sax), John Lewis (piano) and Max Roach (drums). The result was an unprecedented and highly sophisticated form of music which would be subsequently called "Cool Jazz". http://www.sonic.nl/sonic_nl/mailing/917upcsh.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82129 DAVE BRUBECK REUNION LP 05.2019 01. STROLLING 02. SHOUTS 03. PRELUDE 04. DIVERTIMENTO 05. CHORALE 06. LEO'S PLACE 07. DARIEN MODE 08. PIETA An interesting and quite obscure 1957 album from the Dave Brubeck quartet featuring alto sax giant Paul Desmond, bassist Bob Dates and the great Joe Morello on drums. Here one of the most famous groups in the history of Jazz is augmented by tenor saxophonist Dave Van Kreidt. All the music is composed by Van Kreidt and the overall sound is very different from the classic Brubeck set up. This is some sort of classical influenced West Coast Jazz and unlike anything else in the Dave Brubeck discography. http://www.sonic.nl/sonic_nl/mailing/917upcsh.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82130 MAX ROACH : We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite LP 11.2019 Wax Love present a reissue of Max Roach's We Insist!, originally released in 1960. Roach's 1960 masterwork We Insist! is a suite based on the Civil Rights Movement, and involves variations on the theme of the struggle for African Americans to achieve equality in the United States, a struggle that is still all too relevant. Roach began composing with lyricist Oscar Brown Jr. in 1959, with the initial intention of having the suite performed in 1963, on the 100th anniversary of The Emancipation Proclamation. Featuring the wonderful Abbey Lincoln on vocals, as well as Booker Little, Julian Priester, Coleman Hawkins, Olatunji, and more, We Insist! is a truly stunning album, one that knows no equal from that time or since. https://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82130LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82131 MILES DAVIS CONCEPTION LP 11.2019 Following the 1949 and 1950 recordings compiled on Birth Of The Cool (1957), which created the sub-genre of cool jazz, Miles Davis had already moved onto the next thing, because that's what an innovator does. By 1951 he was recording hard bop of the highest order on a variety of formats, including 10" and 7". This LP compiles a number of those recordings, and the fact that the entire record was recorded on one day, October 5, 1951, would be surprising if it weren't the one and only Miles Davis. Featuring Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Walter Bishop, Jr., Tommy Potter, and Jackie McLean in his very first recording session, this is classic '50s Miles Davis. https://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82131LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82132 THELONIOUS MONK : THE UNIQUE THELONIOUS MONK LP 11.2019 Wax Love present a reissue of the seven-song The Unique Thelonious Monk, originally released in 1956. The release was the pianist's second during his remarkable five-year tenure on Riverside. His debut for the label was the aptly titled Plays Duke Ellington (1955) and once again, on this disc, Thelonious Monk's song selection did not feature any original compositions. Rather, the well-chosen standards included exemplify and help further establish the pianist and bandleader within the context of familiar melodies at the head of a trio -- consisting of Oscar Pettiford (bass) and Art Blakey (drums). Regarding the personnel, while Pettiford had also accompanied Monk on the Ellington sides, Blakey replaces Kenny Clarke. The pairing of Monk and Blakey cannot be overstated. Immediately, evidence of their uncanny instrumental interaction is the rhythmic focal point of "Liza, All the Clouds'll Roll Away" as the two play musical cat-and-mouse. They cajole and wheedle atop Pettiford's undulating undercurrent as it sonically corals their skilled syncopation and otherwise inspired mile-a-minute interjections. This is starkly contrast to the haunting, lyrical piano solo on "Memories Of You". Monk infuses the piece with such profound ingenuity and integrity that his re-evaluation and innovative arrangement are singularly and undeniably his own. https://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82132LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82133 WANDA JACKSON ROCKIN' WITH WANDA! LP 11.2019 Wax Love present a reissue of Wanda Jackson's Rockin' With Wanda!, originally released in 1960. Absolutely the best collection of Wanda Jackson's rockabilly recordings, including her key 1956-1960 singles -- "Fujiyama Mama", "Mean Mean Man", "Hot Dog! That Made Him Mad", and others. Rockin' With Wanda! is a leading candidate for the best female rock & roll album of the 1950s. https://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82133LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82134 MILES DAVIS : MONTEREY JAZZ FESTIVAL 1963 LP 11.2019 Recorded September 20, 1963, at the Monterey Jazz Festival, this set featured Miles Davis's new quintet, with George Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. This group, minus Coleman and with the addition of Wayne Shorter, would soon go on to make some of the most highly regarded jazz LPs of all time. This smoking set features a wonderful rendition of "So What", among others. Essential live jazz classic. https://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/WLV.82134LP.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WLV 82135 THE MAYTALS NEVER GROW OLD LP 11.2019 01.
